music: The Power of One

oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh ohh it all..begins!

this one‘s hot.

2009 is ready for Israel Houghton & New Breed’s catchy record.  The Power of One dropped today alongside Mandisa’s new album, Freedom.

It’s the album that makes you want to stand in line for an autographed copy, t-shirt, and poster.  It’s the movement that makes you move.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to see Israel & New Breed perform for the 3rd time in the last couple years.  It was a-ma-zing! I arrived some time around 4:30pm to secure six seats.  I thought I’d pass the time reading, but instead had a mini-pre-show concert when they came out to do a 1.5hour sound check.  This time we found ourselves in the parking lot of Chick-fil-A and Walmart off of FM 1960 and Eldridge Pkwy. There’s something about worship in the most unlikely of places.

I can just imagine all the routine Walmart shoppers wondering “What the…?” when pulling in to grab the milk and laundry detergent they found a mixed crowd of people praising God in the middle of the evening at Walmart.  If you’ve never heard of him, Israel is to contemporary “Sabbath/Sunday morning” worship what Obama is to red and blue states.  Ok, so maybe that’s not the greatest analogy.  You can read more about him in his hometown newpaper, the Houston Chronicle.

Anyways, let me get to the point.  All this hype – it’s not really about Israel, but rather what God is doing through this one man.  He can do the same through me and you.  The message of this album and the theme that hopefully will spread across the globe is “The Power of One“.  Israel tells the story at his concerts of how his 17year old mom was pregnant and all it took was someone to cross the street and share the Message with her.  She ended up birthing a son who takes zealous worship across the world.  Testimony – it’s powerful.

Sometimes we wonder what difference we can make when we haven’t traveled across state lines much less overseas.  Sometimes we wish we had the funds to do something big enough to land a page in Adventist Review. But what would happen if we all recognized that as individual agents carrying the Holy Spirit and the message of the Gospel in our hearts – the difference we could make in one moment of one day for one person.  It start with me.  It all begins with one.

Watch how this empowering message came to life as Israel Houghton shares the story behind The Power of One:
