Lesson 3: Stress
It creeps it’s way from your trembling fingertips up your sleeve and grabs hold of your chest. Your neck begins to stiffen and your head throbs in annoying agony. Your relief may be hours, days, years away. It could take the fierce gentle massage during weekly therapy sessions, an hour of uncontrollable crying, or a soothing shower to blow the steam off your back. Stress is a killer.
This weeks lesson seems to offer the same solution as last week’s issue on anxiety. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Whether you spend 60 minutes crying in your pillow, or 60 dollars on a 30 minute massage therapy session, nothing can conquer your stress and give you inner relief like Jesus.
It seems easy for the stressed out people to get upset with their easygoing calm counterparts. Perhaps it would be nice to relieve some of their own stress by dumping just a little on others. But Jesus beckons for your stress in exchange for true rest. This Sabbath, won’t you just let it go – let that tension seep back down your sleeve and out your fingertips when you take a seat at His feet?
