Kingdom Dog Visits Houston

The moment was intense. I’ll admit, I’m no dog lover. I’m actually allergic and didn’t grow up around household pets other than fish. So while I was very excited my church was hosting an event as unique as Kingdom Dog Ministries, I’d strategically selected my seat in the middle of the back pew. But then I saw it, 3 bones fell one by one encircling the Labrador Retriever’s nose. Along with the audience, I gripped the edge of my seat waiting to see what he would do.

Teaching lessons of obedience with dogs, Kingdom Dog Ministries presents the Gospel in a unique manner attracting audiences of all ages across the country. On March 10th, 2008 Hank Hough and his dog “Prophet,” joined a crowd at the Houston International SDA Church for a special presentation. Lying still amidst the scent of doggie treats, Prophet did not eat them. Hank described that a champion dog is powerful because he has the ability not to do it, and the dog who listens to his master always gets the bigger bone.

As Prophet chased bumpers around the sanctuary, we learned that as humans we are basically the same as dogs but uniquely different. Hank shared, “A dog won’t pretend to be something he’s not. When you find out who you are – don’t be who you’re not.” Not only did Prophet answer only to his name, he recognized and responded only to the voice of his master. The audience attempted to lure Prophet away from Hank, but he refused all enticements. “To steal my dog is just like stealing God’s glory as master trainer,” Hank reiterated. I sat in my seat simply amazed at the magnificent admiration Prophet displayed toward Hank. We reflected a bit on knowing our identity as individuals, and how to recognize the voice of our Master for our own greater benefit.

As the program drew to a close, Hank shared his secret to selecting a champion dog. If there are 3 cute puppies sitting in front of you, how will you know which one to choose? Well, you don’t. “Only the puppy that gets in the hands of a master trainer will become a champion,” and Prophet is the perfect example of how God can use any person submissive to His will through humble obedience. “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you…” (Job 12:7 NIV).

It was in this moment I reckoned with a dog for the first time feeling a connection I could relate to. Kingdom Dog Ministries is incredible not because of their award winning animals, but because those champion dogs have become the greatest preachers behind the most practical pulpit here in America – the “pet talk.” If you are interested in learning more about Kingdom Dog Ministries or would like to have Hank and his dogs host an event in your area, please visit http://kingdomdog.com/.
