2 minutes for 10 years
I stopped with toothbrush still in mouth. I had just answered an early-morning phone call from a friend who broke the news. A plane had flown into the World Trade Center. My first thoughts were of my family and how crazy the visual in my head was, “A plane striking such a proud structure??”. Rinsing the toothpaste from my mouth, I quickly left the dorm and headed across campus to the chapel where everyone was watching the news.
We all remember that day.
This morning together we remembered at work with a moment of silence. It was a strange moment with hundreds of attorneys at 10AM crowding in the common areas to simply be quiet.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
Nothing said, when the clock struck 10:02AM we simply returned to our cubes.
I hung my head and prayed. This prayer wasn’t for those who had passed on…it was for us. We remember the tragedy of 9/11, but what a daily tragedy it is to know we’ve spent 10 ungrateful years not appreciating God’s merciful gift of air in our lungs.
With hurricanes, famine, and Texas fires blazing through my mind – somehow 2 minutes just wasn’t enough.
1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.
6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
11 The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge
– Psalm 46
As we remember, let us not forget – we live, because He lives.
